Ein Geheimtipp unter erfahrenen Thailand Touristen ist Koh Tao, eine der romantischsten tropischen Inseln im Süden von Thailand.
Koh Tao bedeutet übersetzt 'Die Schildkröteninsel'. Als das 'Tropical Diving Paradise' ist die von Korallen umgebene Insel Koh Tao durch seine sehr schönen Tauch- und Schnorchelgründen weltbekannt. Die tropische Insel ist eher klein, ideal zum relaxen und nur per Boot oder Katamaran von der Insel Koh Samui oder Koh Phangan und vom Festland über Suratthani oder Chumphorn erreichbar.
Das hat den Vorteil das Koh Tao noch weitgehend vom Massentourismus verschont geblieben ist. Am Tag kommen mehrere Speed-Boote mit Urlaubern von den beiden Nachbarinseln Koh Samui und Koh Phangan als Tagestouristen zu Schnorcheltouren.
An der Nordwestküste von Koh Tao liegt vorgelagert ist die kleine Inselgruppe Nang Yuan, ideal zum Baden und Schnorcheln. (siehe Foto)

Als beste Reisezeit für Koh Tao gelten die Monate von Dezember bis März. Im April und Mai ist es sehr heiß und trocken, die sogenannte Regenzeit geht auf Koh Tao etwa von September bis Dezember. So das auch die Monate Juli und August, da es dann meist nicht zu heiß und zu schwül ist, als gute Reisezeit gelten. Siehe auch Reisewetter Süd-Thailand.

Koh Tao Anreise: Mit dem Flugzeug von Bangkok nach Koh Samui, dann von Samuis Hafen 'Nathon' mit dem Boot nach Koh Tao.
Einfacher geht es fast mit dem Bus vom Bangkok Southern Busterminal oder Zug nach Chumphon [ 7h ]. Danach mit dem Boot oder Expressboot nach Koh Tao. Weiterhin gibt es Katamaran-Boote von Lomprayah, die auch bei schlechtem Wetter fahren können und eine geschlossene klimatisierte Kabine besitzen. Sie fahren täglich von Chomporn und Koh Samui nach Koh Tao.

Die Strände: Koh Tao hat viele einsame Strände mit schattenspendenden Palmen und wird meist von Rucksacktouristen aus aller Welt, insbesondere aus Australien, Neuseeland, England, Deutschland und Skandinavien besucht. Auf Koh Tao gibt es ein vielseitiges Angebot an Unterkünften, viele Bungalows und Hotels liegen am Sairee Beach, gleich direkt nördlich von Mae Haad, wo die Touristen mit dem Boot ankommen. Sie anderen Strände wie Chalok Baan Kao, Tanote, Ao Leuk sind meist über die kleine schmale Inselstraßen erreichbar.

Ban Mae Haad ist das touristische Zentrum von Koh Tao und liegt an der Westküste am südlichen Ende des längsten Strandes Sairee Beach.

Hier kann man Einkäufe erledigen, Geld abheben und in vielen kleinen Restaurants essen. Hier finden sie diverse Reisebüros, Tauchschulen, Supermärkte, Internetcafes und nette Restaurants für die abendliche Unterhaltung.

An der Koh Tao Westküste liegt nördlich an Mae Haad angrenzend, nur 10 Minuten Fußmarsch entfernt der Sairee Beach.
Ein fast 2 Kilometer langer, schöner weißer Sandstrand.
Auch hier gibt es ein großes Angebot an Bungalows, Hotels, Restaurants, Shops, Tauchschulen und eine Polizeistation.. Sogar ein Museum für historischen Fischfang finden Sie hier.

Der drittgrößte Strand auf Koh Tao ist der ruhige Chalok Baan Kao Beach an der Südspitze der Insel mit sehr schönen Unterkünften und einer Felsformation in Form eines sitzenden Buddhas sowie Aussichtspunkten .

Die kleineren Strände wie Sai nuan Beach, Cape Jeda Beach, June Juea Beach, oder aber den Janson Bay und Tanote Bay oder Mango Bay liegen um die Insel verteilt und sind oft schlecht auf dem Landweg direkt erreichbar. Sie werden dann meist von den Hotels bzw. Ressorts von Mae Haad mit Booten abgeholt.
